- Asagao, the Ipomoea nil flower, or morning glory, came to Japan in the Heian period for medicinal purposes and its cultivation became popular in the Edo period, being depicted in ukiyo-e. Its seeds, being expensive, symbolize wealth and prosperity. In addition, because of its strong vine, it symbolizes a “strong bond”.
